Abstract

Background and Objectives: Midfacial fractures are common injuries that often result from bomb explosions, traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, and falls. These injuries pose significant health challenges, particularly if left untreated, potentially leading to both functional and cosmetic complications. This study aims to provide statistical insight into the prevalence and causes of midfacial fractures, thereby supporting awareness initiatives to prevent violence, accidents, and family-related trauma.

Methodology: This descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the National and Specialized Afghan Police Hospital in 2020. Data were collected on the age and gender of patients, specifically police personnel and their family members, treated at the hospital. Out of 590 patients seen in the maxillofacial department that year, 51 were identified with fractures of the middle third of the face. The sampling method was universal, and data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel.

Results: A total of 51 patients were included in the study, comprising 43 males [84.4%] and 8 females [15.6%], resulting in a male-to-female ratio of 5.4:1. The age of the patients ranged from 21 to 40 years. Bomb explosions were identified as the leading cause of midfacial fractures.

Conclusion: The study found that bomb explosions were the most frequent cause of midfacial fractures, with a higher prevalence among males. The average age of affected individuals was approximately 21 years.
